About the Big Bend Cares
Virtual AIDS Quilt

In celebration of World AIDS Day, December 1, 2004, Big Bend Cares is introducing the Virtual AIDS Quilt. Each "panel" in our virtual AIDS Quilt is the celebration of a special human life — one that unfortunately lost the battle against HIV/AIDS.

While everyone memorialized on this Virtual AIDS Quilt has passed away from HIV/AIDS or AIDS-related complications, our focus is on the individuals and the achievements that made those who are memorialized memorable and special. On our Celebrity Panels, HIV/AIDS is addressed when celebrities used their fame to act in the capacity of "activist," to advance HIV/AIDS awareness, or when their experience with the disease is one from which we all can learn.

Last year, the global AIDS pandemic claimed an estimated 3 million lives, and an estimated 5 million people acquired HIV — bringing to 40 million the estimated number of women, men and children living with the virus world-wide. As you view these panels, we encourage you to remember loved ones and friends with a sense of joy, to honor those who once graced us with their unique presence, and to remember that the struggle continues. …
