In celebration of World AIDS Day, December 1, 2004, Big Bend Cares is introducing the Virtual AIDS Quilt. Each "panel" in our virtual AIDS Quilt is the celebration of a special human life one that unfortunately lost the battle against HIV/AIDS.
While everyone memorialized on this Virtual AIDS Quilt has passed away from HIV/AIDS or AIDS-related complications, our focus is on the individuals and the achievements that made those who are memorialized memorable and special. On our Celebrity Panels, HIV/AIDS is addressed when celebrities used their fame to act in the capacity of "activist," to advance HIV/AIDS awareness, or when their experience with the disease is one from which we all can learn.
Last year, the global AIDS pandemic claimed an estimated 3 million lives, and an estimated 5 million people acquired HIV bringing to 40 million the estimated number of women, men and children living with the virus world-wide. As you view these panels, we encourage you to remember loved ones and friends with a sense of joy, to honor those who once graced us with their unique presence, and to remember that the struggle continues.
